Are you a coffee addict? Then you better read this.
In The Know: Foodie reminds coffee lovers that there are three reasons why drinking that cup of java is bad news on an empty stomach:
1. Digestive issues
Drinking coffee on an empty stomach will increase the stomach’s acid production, which is used to digest food. If that happens often, our body will lose its ability to produce that acid on its own, leading to indigestion and heartburn.
2. Nutritional problems
Studies have shown that coffee facilitates ‘gastric emptying,’ meaning it gets food out of our stomach faster than our body would normally do. When food doesn’t stay in our body long enough, vitamins and minerals don’t get absorbed properly, leaving us with nutritional deficiencies.
Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can also worsen symptoms of anxiety, as well as increase heart rate, cause irritability, and make one lose focus.
Never drink coffee on an empty stomach — here’s why
