AS CAMPAIGN WINDS DOWN, PIMENTEL GAINS EDGE IN SENATE RACE

With the election campaign entering its final stage, reelectionist Senator Koko Pimentel III, chair of the Trade and Commerce Committee was one of the biggest gainers, rising three percentage points in the recently published April 28 to May 3 Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey and solidifying his spot among the 12 candidates likely to win a Senate seat in the May 13 midterm polls.

The results mirror the reelectionist senator’s performance in the latest Pulse Asia survey conducted from April 10 to 14, which had Pimentel rising four spots from from the previous poll conducted by Pulse Asia from March 23 to 27.

On Thursday, the senator from Mindanao said he welcomes the survey results that showed him “finishing strong” as the campaign winds down.

“Surveys have consistently shown that the people are satisfied with the overall performance of the administration and the President.”

Pimentel attributes his strong showing, as well as the positive survey numbers of administration senatorial candidates, to the “overwhelming support for the Duterte government and its programs and policies.”

“They say in campaigns that messaging is crucial, but no message is as powerful as performance,” stressed the PDP-Laban president.

“Surveys have consistently shown that the people are satisfied with the overall performance of the administration and the President, and it is only natural that they would approve of his candidates as well.”

A recent SWS survey also showed the Duterte administration obtaining record-high approval ratings, with 81% of Filipinos polled expressing satisfaction with the national government.

Pimentel pointed out that among the different issues polled, the administration also got 81% with regard to “helping the poor,” which he said was indicative of the impact of legislative measures passed during the first three years of the Duterte administration.

“When I was Senate President, we passed laws providing free college education, free irrigation, and free Wi-Fi, and these initiatives—coupled with government efforts to improve social services—have really been welcomed by our countrymen, who want a government that genuinely cares for them and works to improve their welfare.”
