The National Electrification Administration (NEA) has ordered all electric cooperatives (ECs) to be on alert and ensure contingency plans are in place to address power outages that may result in the wake of Tropical Depression Carina.
The NEA through its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (DRRMD) on Monday (July 13) issued an advisory, asking the 121 ECs to take the appropriate contingency measures to mitigate the possible impact of the weather disturbance on their electric services to consumers.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was raised over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan.
The ECs were also directed to activate their respective Emergency Response Organization when the need arises to implement without delay the appropriate emergency response plans.
The NEA also urged the power coops to continuously monitor weather updates from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), and report all significant outages to the electrification agency.
In its 11 a.m. weather bulletin on Monday, PAGASA said Carina — the country’s third tropical cyclone for 2020 — turns to the northwest as it continues to approach extreme northern Luzon.
The NEA also urged the power coops to continuously monitor weather updates.
At 10 a.m., Carina’s center was estimated based on all available data at 245 km East of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was raised over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gonzaga, Santa Teresita, Buguey, eastern Lal-lo, eastern Gattaran, and eastern Baggao).
