How do you stop trash from going into the ocean?

Latin American countries have found the solution in using biofences.

The World Economic Forum shows how these special barriers are made and are being in Guatemala, Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

Floating containers are attached together using a mesh. Locals make them float on the surface of the river to capture trash. Every day, the containers collect the trash and bring them to recycling centers.

According to the World Economic Forum, there has been a reduction of 60 percent of trash entering the sea with the use of biofences. It has also led to better waste treatment in Guatemala.

Other countries are set to follow. El Salvador will soon be installing biofences while Panama, Argentina, Somalia and Malaysia have all shown interest.

Maybe the Philippines should also consider installing biofences, don’t you think so?
