SORSOGON DOCTORS UNDERGO FAMILY MED TRAINING

Around 31 doctors are undergoing the Sorsogon Family Medicine Residency Training Program in an effort to strengthen the services of medical practitioners and capabilities of hospitals in the province.

The Sorsogon Provincial Hospital has tapped the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PFAP) led by one of its consultants, Dr. Aileen Espina, together with the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH) to facilitate the training program.

“This is part of our capacity-building measures to ensure that our doctors are equipped and well-trained to serve the Sorsoganons.”

“This is part of our capacity-building measures to ensure that our doctors are equipped and well-trained to serve the Sorsoganons,” said Governor Chiz Escudero.

“Now more than ever, the well-being and health of each and every one are our paramount concern,” Escudero stressed.

The first batch of doctors from the Sorsogon Provincial Hospital, four district hospitals, four medicare hospitals and 17 rural health units from across the province started the Family Medicine Residency Training in July, which will run for three to four years.

“The family medicine training bodes well in raising the category of Sorsogon Provincial Hospital to a Level 3 hospital.”

According to the governor, the family medicine training will not only equip resident doctors with expertise, but also bodes well in raising the category of Sorsogon Provincial Hospital to a Level 3 hospital from the current Level 2.

The Department of Health describes a Level 3 hospital as a teaching or training hospital with at least any two accredited residency programs for physicians in any medical or surgical specialty and subspecialty.

It should also have a rehabilitation unit, ambulatory surgical clinic and a dialysis unit, among others.

“Layon ng programang ito na iangat pa ang serbisyong pangkalusugan para sa ating mamamayan sa buong Sorsogon lalo na ngayon sa panahon ng pandemya. Kapag malusog ang pamayanan, mas mabilis ang asenso ng bayan,” Escudero concluded.
