MANILA LGU, MMDA OPEN MANILA YACHT CLUB FLOODGATE

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Atty. Don Artes, together with Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, led the opening of the floodgate and installation of trash traps at the Manila Yacht Club in the City of Manila.

The activity is closely aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ‘s governance agenda, which aims to reduce risks in flood-prone areas in Metro Manila by improving solid waste management and disposal and ensure unimpeded water flow on drainages and other waterways.

According to Artes, installing trash traps is one solution to mitigate flooding in Manila.

“Trash traps serve as barriers to prevent the flow of garbage thrown in waterways and stop it from reaching the pumping stations and eventually into the Manila Bay.”

“MMDA regularly deploys personnel to haul trash from different portions of Manila Bay near the Manila Yacht Club to maintain the waterway’s cleanliness,” the MMDA head added.

The MMDA regularly conducts clean-up drives in various areas of Metro Manila to maintain cleanliness and prevent massive flooding this rainy season.

For his part, Domagoso stated that opening the floodgates and installing trash traps are proactive measures in anticipation of heavier rains in the coming days, which will surely affect the City of Manila.

“The opening of the floodgate near the Manila Yacht Club serves as a short-term measure to alleviate the flooding issues affecting Kalaw Avenue, Padre Faura, and Taft Avenue during the rainy season.”

“The City of Manila already has a Drainage Master Plan which aims to reduce the risk of flooding by improving drainage capacity, addressing current and future drainage needs, and proposing solutions to improve water management,” he added.

Domagoso also expressed gratitude to the MMDA for its continuous support for the city.

He also urged the public to be responsible and disciplined in disposing their garbage.
