Senator Alan Peter Cayetano urged his colleagues in the Senate to focus on achieving lasting reforms, saying politics should only be temporary while true transformation must be permanent.
Speaking during his manifestation on the change of leadership in the 20th Congress, Cayetano warned against allowing politics to overshadow genuine change, especially at a time when trust in government is low.
“Allowing politics to overshadow genuine change.”
“My hope is this, usually permanent ang politics, ‘yung change temporary. I hope together we can find a way na maging permanent ‘yung change or true transformation at temporary ‘yung politics,” the veteran legislator said.
The seasoned lawmaker also addressed the massive corruption plaguing the country, stressing that the Senate must rely on God’s guidance to find solutions.
“We, as a Senate, have to really surrender to God how we will find a solution for the massive corruption that is happening in our country.”
“We, as a Senate, have to really surrender to God how we will find a solution for the massive corruption that is happening in our country at a time where the trust in our government institutions and leaders may be at its lowest,” he said.
Despite the leadership shift, the senator said he will likely remain with the minority bloc. Cayetano gave assurance, however, that he is ready to work with his colleagues for the good of the country.
“I would like to manifest that I’ll probably remain in the minority. But I look forward to working with you whether we agree or disagree because the country needs the Senate now more than ever,” he said.
Cayetano congratulated both outgoing Senate President Chiz Escudero and newly elected Senate President Tito Sotto, praising their humility and sincerity.
He added that whatever political differences exist, the Senate should continue to serve as an institution that “loves God and loves our country”.
