QC GOVT, KHAN ACADEMY PARTNER FOR DIGITAL LEARNING

Quezon City is taking significant steps to integrate digital learning tools into public education through its partnership with Khan Academy Philippines, a global nonprofit committed to providing free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere.

What began as a small pilot with just 494 students in August 2023 has grown into a citywide program reaching over 62,000 learners by April 2025—the fastest rollout of Khan Academy in the Philippines.

Within only two weeks, all public schools in Quezon City were onboarded, showcasing the city’s strong commitment to innovation in education.

Mayor Joy Belmonte welcomed the initiative as a milestone for learning recovery.

“This partnership reflects our vision for a more equitable and future-ready public education system.”

“By harnessing technology, we are giving our teachers better tools and our students better opportunities. This partnership reflects our vision for a more equitable and future-ready public education system,” Belmonte said.

Teachers across the city highlight the benefits of Khanmigo, Khan Academy’s AI-powered assistant, which helps reduce lesson preparation time by over three hours per week.

The platform also provides ready-made lessons, interactive exercises, and real-time dashboards that allow teachers to track student progress and adjust instruction to learner needs.

For students, the results are equally promising. The Mathtalino Summer Camp, a five-week remediation program for incoming Grade 7 learners with low math proficiency, showed remarkable progress—raising scores from 4.03% at pre-test to 73.99% at post-test.

To build on this momentum, the city will pilot the school-wide use of the Khan Academy platform and Khanmigo AI, allowing Quezon City to take its first steps in exploring how AI can support teaching and learning.

It also plans to expand the Mathtalino model into after school programs under DepEd’s ARAL initiative and summer classes for the lowest performing students.

At the same time, the city is encouraging private sector participation through the Adopt-a-School Program, which offers a 150% tax incentive for corporate partners who help bridge infrastructure gaps in schools, including the provision of gadgets and WiFi.

Geraldine Acuña-Sunshine, President and CEO of Khan Academy Philippines, underscored the partnership’s significance.

“Quezon City is showing the nation what is possible when teachers are empowered with the right tools.”

“Quezon City is showing the nation what is possible when teachers are empowered with the right tools. With AI support and high-quality resources, we can accelerate learning recovery and give every child a fair chance to succeed,” Acuña-Sunshine added.

Through these efforts, Quezon City is building a model for how local governments can combine global tools with local innovation to create a stronger, more inclusive education system.
