MMDA REROUTES EDSA TRAFFIC FOR MRT7 GIRDER LAUNCH

Parts of EDSA near West and North Avenues in Quezon City have been closed to traffic starting Feb. 1, 2026 following the scheduled girder launching activities of Metro Rail Transit (MRT-7), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Department of Transportation (DOTR) announced.

The temporary lane closures ensure the safety of the motoring public as several heavy equipment and machinery will lift parts of a steel superstructure that will connect the MRT-7’s North EDSA turnback track along West Avenue.

The DOTR-Project Management Office sought assistance from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Quezon City Government to implement temporary lane closures and traffic rerouting schemes to mitigate its impact on the motoring public.

“Traffic enforcers from MMDA and Quezon City government, and traffic marshals from DOTr’s private contractor have been deployed to minimize the effect on traffic.”

In a press briefing, MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes said traffic enforcers from MMDA and Quezon City government, and traffic marshals from DOTr’s private contractor have been deployed to minimize the effect on traffic.

“Traffic signages are also being installed to inform and guide motorists and other road users,” he said.

“Minimal traffic is expected during the partial closure of portions of EDSA during nighttime but big impact on traffic is expected during full closure to give way to the construction activities.”

“Minimal traffic is expected during the partial closure of portions of EDSA during nighttime but big impact on traffic is expected during full closure to give way to the construction activities,” said Artes, who was joined by DOTr Undersecretary TJ Batan and Alfredo Kimpo, Assistant City Administrator for Quezon City Government, during the press briefing.

Along EDSA near North Avenue, portions of the two outermost lanes on the northbound direction and the two innermost lanes on the southbound direction have been closed to vehicle traffic starting Feb. 1.

The closed lanes serve as sites where tower support systems will be built for the girder launching activities. The closures also ensure that motorists and commuters are not put in harm’s way while heavy equipment maneuver during the lifting and launching works.

LANE CLOSURES

Temporary lane closures will be implemented during girder launching activities which will be done from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM. During lane closures, two zipper lanes will be opened at the opposite direction to lessen the activity’s impact to motorists and commuters.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes for vehicles going to Balintawak and Cubao during the scheduled lane closures.

For northbound motorists heading to Balintawak from Cubao via EDSA, the following alternate routes are available:

• From Cubao, turn right at Quezon Avenue, then turn at Agham Road, left at North Avenue, right at Mindanao Avenue, left turn at Congressional Avenue and exit to EDSA.

After the girder launching activities are completed, the tower support systems will be taken down, and restoration works at closed lanes will be done at the expense of the MRT-7 contractor, according to the DOTR-PMO.

Reopening of closed lanes at northbound direction of EDSA is scheduled on May 8, while the southbound direction on May 18.
