The destruction was carried out through hydrolysis and physical destruction at the Subport of Mindanao Container Terminal in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
The seized items, with an estimated market value of ₱188,038,350 as assessed by Customs Examiners, were confiscated during intelligence-driven enforcement operations across Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Bukidnon, and Camiguin.
The condemnation activity was witnessed by officials from the Bureau of Customs (BOC), partner law enforcement agencies, the local government unit (LGU), private stakeholders and other government representatives. It was carried out in accordance with existing laws and environmental regulations to ensure transparency and the proper disposal of the seized items.
Nepomuceno said the operation reflects the Port’s firm commitment to enforcing customs laws, protecting public health, and safeguarding government revenues.
“The destruction of these smuggled cigarettes sends a clear message that the Bureau of Customs will not tolerate unlawful importation and distribution.”
“The destruction of these smuggled cigarettes sends a clear message that the Bureau of Customs will not tolerate unlawful importation and distribution. We will continue to protect public interest and promote fair and lawful trade,” the Commissioner said.
The BOC reiterated that cigarette smuggling deprives the government of revenues needed for essential public services, undermines legitimate businesses, and poses risks to consumers.
This condemnation forms part of the Bureau’s sustained nationwide drive to suppress smuggling and ensure that seized illicit goods are permanently removed from circulation.
