While rice prices in Cebu have surged to record highs—some varieties now selling for more than ₱70 per kilogram due to limited supply, rising fuel costs, and recent natural disasters, Bohol continues to demonstrate stability through its Bol-anon Rice Program, offering rice at an affordable ₱36 per kilo.
According to Governor Erico Aris Aumentado the program continues to gain strong public support, with sales reaching over ₱150,000 in a single day.
“The program continues to gain strong public support, with sales reaching over ₱150,000 in a single day.”
The initiative reflects the province’s effort to strengthen local food security and reduce dependence on expensive commercial rice.
Aumentado emphasized that the price of Bol-anon rice has remained consistently stable for the past six months, providing relief to local consumers amid rising food prices in other areas.
“Bol-anon rice has a longer shelf life compared to ordinary commercial rice, making it a practical option for households.”
The governor also noted that Bol-anon rice has a longer shelf life compared to ordinary commercial rice, making it a practical option for households.
Despite global uncertainties, including tensions in the Middle East that could affect fuel costs and supply chains, the provincial government remains optimistic that Bohol’s rice supply will remain stable through 2026.
The contrast highlights the advantage of locally supported agricultural programs, where strengthening local production and distribution systems helps shield communities from the volatility affecting commercial rice markets.
