BONG GO: PH CAN BECOME SPORTS POWERHOUSE

Senator Bong Go said Alex Eala’s emotional post-match speech after defeating defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek should inspire the country to invest earlier and deeper in young Filipino athletes, saying her victory showed that the Philippines has many talents waiting to be discovered and developed.

“Kaya nating maging sports powerhouse kung palalakasin natin ang suporta sa ating mga atleta, lalo na sa grassroots. Marami tayong talento na naghihintay lang mabigyan ng pagkakataon, tamang training, pasilidad, at suporta,” Go said.

Eala defeated Swiatek, 7(11)-6(9), 6-2, in the third round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, advancing to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. The 21-year-old Filipina also became the first player from the Philippines to reach the fourth round of a major tournament.

Eala’s win came on Centre Court in one of the major upsets of the tournament. She held her nerve in a long opening set that Swiatek had chances to take, winning the tiebreak 11-9 before controlling the second set. Swiatek missed two set points in the first set, while Eala opened the second set strongly and built a 4-0 lead before closing out the match in straight sets.

Eala became emotional after the match as she reflected on what the moment meant for a player who grew up in the Philippines.

“And maybe for, for someone like Iga, who has won so many Slams, or maybe someone like Serena or Venus, this achievement may seem small, but for someone who grew up in the Philippines… and you know, I used to train with my brother and my grandfather every day after school with my ruffled socks and my light-up shoes and chubby cheeks, so to her, this is everything. But, obviously, because I’m emotional doesn’t mean I’m satisfied, so… yeah, okay, next round, let’s go!” Eala said in her post-match speech.

The victory also carried added weight because Swiatek was the defending champion, a six-time Grand Slam winner, and one of the top players in the draw.

Eala, seeded 29th, responded with aggressive and composed tennis, including 24 winners, to secure the biggest win of her career so far.

Go said Eala’s words should push sports officials, schools, local communities, and private partners to look harder for young athletes who may have the same drive but lack access to proper coaching, equipment, and facilities.

“Ipinakita niya na kayang makipagsabayan ng atletang Pilipino sa pinakamataas na antas kung may disiplina, tiyaga, at suporta.”

“Nakaka-proud si Alex Eala. Ipinakita niya na kayang makipagsabayan ng atletang Pilipino sa pinakamataas na antas kung may disiplina, tiyaga, at suporta. Maraming kabataan ang may talento, pero kailangan silang matulungan nang maaga,” he said.

Eala will next face 13th seed Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round. Paolini, the 2024 Wimbledon runner-up, is another major test for the Filipina as she continues her run in the Round of 16. The match also comes months after Eala defeated Paolini, then ranked among the top players in the world, 6-1, 7-6(5), at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in February.

Go said Eala’s upcoming match should be seen not only as another major sporting moment for the Philippines, but also as proof that Filipino athletes can keep advancing when they are given enough chances to compete at higher levels.

“Hindi natatapos sa isang panalo ang laban. Tuloy-tuloy ang laban, tuloy-tuloy ang training, at tuloy-tuloy din dapat ang suporta natin sa ating mga atleta,” he said.

As Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, Go has repeatedly called for stronger grassroots sports development, saying young athletes should not have to rely only on personal resources or chance discovery before receiving serious training support.

He said Eala’s story reflects the everyday reality of many Filipino athletes who begin in simple settings, train with family support, and pursue their dreams despite limited access to structured sports programs.

“Hindi natin dapat hintayin na sumikat muna ang isang atleta bago natin siya suportahan. Dapat mula sa barangay at paaralan pa lang, may programa na para mahasa ang talento ng kabataan,” Go stressed.

He was one of the authors and co-sponsors of Republic Act No. 11470, which established the National Academy of Sports in New Clark City. The law created a system that combines secondary education with a specialized sports curriculum for qualified student-athletes.

Go also filed Senate Bill No. 171, or the proposed National Academy of Sports Regional Expansion Act of 2025, which seeks to establish regional NAS campuses to give more student-athletes outside Luzon access to training, education, and development opportunities closer to their communities.

He said regional access is important because talent exists across the country, including in provinces and cities where young athletes may not have the means to travel or enroll in specialized programs far from home.

“Maraming batang Pilipino ang magaling, pero kulang sa coach, equipment, pasilidad, at oportunidad. Kapag inilapit natin ang sports programs sa kanila, mas marami tayong matutulungang kabataan,” Go said.

He also stressed that sports development is not only about winning international competitions. Go said sports can help young people build discipline, stay away from vices, improve their health, and find opportunities for education and personal growth.

“Ang sports ay hindi lang tungkol sa medalya.”

“Ang sports ay hindi lang tungkol sa medalya. Para sa kabataan, ito ay disiplina, pangarap, kalusugan, at magandang kinabukasan. Kaya dapat tuloy-tuloy ang suporta natin sa grassroots sports,” he said.

Go said Eala’s victory, and her next match at Wimbledon, should encourage the country to continue developing young athletes in tennis and other sports while ensuring that support reaches those who are still unknown but already showing potential.

“Ang panalo ni Alex ay inspirasyon sa buong Pilipinas. Ipagpatuloy natin ang paghahanap at pagsuporta sa mga batang atleta. Kaya nating makakita pa ng mas maraming Alex Eala kung bibigyan natin sila ng pagkakataon,” he concluded.
