Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso warned residents of a rise in “WILD” diseases referring to Water-borne diseases, Influenza, Leptospirosis, and Dengue.
In his Facebook Live program “Talk to the People,” Domagoso said the Manila Health Department, headed by OIC-City Health Officer Dr. Grace Padilla, observed an uptick in influenza-like illness during the city’s regular directional meeting.
Data from the MHD as of August 3 showed 845 cumulative influenza-like illness cases since January 1, along with 2,105 dengue cases, 111 leptospirosis cases, and 77 confirmed COVID-19 cases for the same period.
“Kanina pong umaga during our regular directional meeting, may ulat po sa atin na medyo nag-uptick po ‘yung influenza-like illness. ‘Yan ‘yung mga trangkaso, kung hindi ako nagkakamali, ubo, pagsipon, and so on and so forth,” the mayor said.
“Meron din tayong mga nakumpirmang COVID-19, pero nasa manageable level naman ho at ligtas naman po sila,” he added, referring to confirmed cases in the city.
According to the Domagoso’s health advisory, water-borne diseases include typhoid, cholera, and acute gastroenteritis, while leptospirosis is spread through animal or rat urine mixed into floodwater.

“Dalasan po natin ang paghuhugas ng kamay. Kung kayo po’y may sakit, iiwas ninyo ang inyong sarili sa inyong mga kaanak para naman po’y hindi na ito maisalin,” Domagoso said, urging residents to wash their hands frequently and isolate if sick.
“Iwasan ho natin ‘yung mga kalsadang may baha, isa ‘yan sa mga challenges ng ating bansa ngayon dahil marami talagang nakararanas ng pagbaha, hindi lamang po dito sa Maynila,” he said.
Domagoso said the city has made Doxycycline available at City Hall, hospitals, and health centers.
“Over-the-counter po ‘yan, pwede niyo naman pong magamit bilang proteksyon kung kayo’y nae-expose sa mga baha,” he said.
Domagoso also encouraged, but did not require, residents to wear masks in enclosed public spaces.
“Hindi po siya required, but we prefer each and everyone, in as much as we can, to wear a mask, lalo na kung tayo’y nasa enclosed area.”

“Ayoko naman kayong nagkakasakit. ‘Pag nagkakasakit, lalo na ‘yung mga nagtatrabaho o naghahanapbuhay, mahirap po ‘yung sa pag napasukan nating kumpanya o ‘yung trabaho particular eh ‘no work, no pay,'” he added, noting the economic impact of illness on daily wage earners.
