ALAN CAYETANO TO YOUTH: DISCOVER YOUR ‘VIP’

Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano challenged the next generation to break away from social expectations and embrace their true identity as “VIPs” — anchored on Vision, Identity, and Purpose.

Speaking before thousands of young participants during the Christian Bishops and Ministers Association of the Philippines (CBMAP) Youth Conference, Cayetano cautioned attendees against defining their self-worth through worldly standards such as social media popularity, career titles, or academic metrics.

“Kung ano man ang trabaho mo, hindi ‘yan ang identity mo.”

“Kung ano man ang trabaho mo, hindi ‘yan ang identity mo,” the veteran legislator said.

“Ipakita ninyo na ‘Ang aming identity ay wala sa kayamanan, wala sa grades, wala sa gaano kasikat sa barkada or sa social media… ang aming identity ay nasa Panginoon’,” the seasoned lawmaker added.

The senator reminded the youth that fundamental value is rooted in faith and not on vanity metrics or external expectations.

Elaborating on his “VIP” framework for youth empowerment, he explained that having a clear Vision counteracts feelings of hopelessness and directionlessness.

“Hindi ka pwedeng magplano nang wala kang vision… Isa sa dapat mong parating tinatanong ay, ‘Lord, ano’ng vision mo sa buhay ko? Lord, why am I here?'” Cayetano said.

“True Identity is rooted in faith rather than social media clout, monetary wealth, or personal accolades.”

He emphasized that true Identity is rooted in faith rather than social media clout, monetary wealth, or personal accolades, reminding the crowd that God alone holds the authority to grade human worth.

“Iisa lang po ang marunong mag-grade sa tao — ang Diyos lang,” Cayetano said.

Finally, the Minority Leader stressed the importance of remaining focused on one’s core purpose to avoid being tempted, confused, or deceived by competing ambitions and external peer pressure.

“Remember that the devil will first try to tempt you. ‘Pag hindi ka niya na-tempt, he will try to confuse you, to deceive you… At y’ung purpose mo ang mag-ga-guide sa ’yo at magbibigay ng pag-asa,” he said.

In an interview following his speech, Cayetano expressed concern over reports of young people losing hope despite having their entire lives ahead of them.

“Nakakalungkot ‘pag nababasa po natin na nawawalan ng pag-asa ang kabataan,” he said.

Cayetano emphasized that young people can still look forward to a better future regardless of their circumstances, including poverty, illness, and other personal difficulties.

He also called for more gatherings that would help young Filipinos strengthen their faith, discover meaning in their lives, and develop a stronger sense of community.

“May pag-asa… So I hope there are many more conventions that bring young people together, build the community, because they are our future,” Cayetano concluded.
