Senator Bong Go expressed readiness to support measures that would ease the burden on Filipinos should global oil prices surge to $80 per barrel, stressing the ripple effects of higher fuel costs on basic commodities while voicing deep concern over the safety of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the Middle East.
With gasoline now hovering at roughly P56 to P63 per liter and diesel around P56 to P59 per liter in many parts of the country, Go noted that any further increase could immediately push up the prices of essential goods and services relied upon by ordinary households.
During an ambush interview, the veteran legislator underscored that any action taken by Congress must focus squarely on reducing the weight borne by ordinary Filipinos, particularly the poor, as tensions abroad continue to affect global oil markets and domestic prices.

“Kung ano pong kailangan na gawin natin sa gobyerno para mapagaan po ang papasanin ng taumbayan. Alam n’yo bawat piso na pagtaas po ng presyo ng langis, apektado po ‘yan. Domino effect po ‘yan. Tataas ang presyo ng bilihin. Alam n’yo po bawat piso ay napakahalaga sa mga kababayan nating mahihirap,” the seasoned lawmaker said.
The senator explained that fuel price increases often trigger a domino effect on the cost of transporting goods across the country, which in turn affects the prices of everyday items such as rice, vegetables, fish, pork, chicken, eggs, and other basic commodities, as well as transportation fares and delivery costs.
He made clear that he is prepared to support legislative action in the Senate, including the possible suspension of excise tax on fuel, if it would help prevent further increases in pump prices and cushion the public from additional strain.
“Kaya kami sa Senado handa po akong sumuporta kung anu-ano pong mga dapat naming gawin dito sa Senado na kung kailangang isuspend muna itong excise tax kung mapababa natin ang presyo to hold lang, to hold on na hindi tumaas ang presyo, suportado po natin ito,” Go added.
He emphasized that the continued tension in the Middle East already weighs heavily on Filipinos, both economically and emotionally, particularly those with loved ones in conflict-affected areas.
“Alam ko mahihirapan ang mga kababayan natin dahil patuloy ang tensyon sa Middle East. Ako po ay nagdarasal sa Panginoong Diyos, kay Allah na sana po ay matapos na itong kaguluhang ito dahil apektado po ang ating mga kababayan pati ‘yung mga kababayan natin walang peace of mind dahil ang mga kamag-anak nila nasa gitna po ng giyera at meron pong nasaktan, may namatay po. Dasal po, noh? Nakikiramay po ako sa pamilya ng nasawi dahil sa giyerang ito. Sana po ay matapos na ito,” Go said.
Alongside possible tax relief, he called on relevant agencies to immediately extend targeted assistance to vulnerable sectors, particularly transport workers and low-income households.
“At nananawagan po ako sa gobyerno, sa DOTr (Department of Transportation), ‘yung fuel subsidy ibigay nyo po sa mahihirap nating kababayan. ‘Yun muna ang dapat pagtuunan ng pansin at importansya. Sa DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development), ‘yung mga nahihirapan ngayon, ‘yun po ang unahin n’yo. ‘Yan naman po ang mandato ng mga nasa gobyerno. Sa DSWD, sa DOTr, unahin po ang mga apektado talaga sa giyerang ito,” Go said.
When asked if he is worried that a prolonged conflict could further endanger Filipinos in the Middle East and trigger sharper increases in oil prices, Go responded without hesitation.
“Sobrang worried po ako. Araw-araw po akong nagdarasal at nananawagan sa gobyerno, dapat po alerto tayo. Opisina ko rin po ay bukas po sa ating mga kababayan, mga OFWs. Kaya tayo merong Department of OFWs, ito po ‘yung Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) na isa po tayo sa nakipaglaban na maisabatas ito para meron na pong departamento na nakatutok talaga. I am very, very, very worried dito sa situation na ito. Sana po ay matapos na ito at hindi maapektuhan ang mga kababayan nating OFWs. Mahalaga po sa akin ang buhay ng ating mga kababayan na nasa abroad na apektado po sa giyerang ito, sa tensyon sa Middle East. Sana po ay matapos na ito,” he continued.
Go further urged all concerned agencies to remain vigilant and proactive, noting the inevitable economic consequences if global oil prices continue to climb.
“I am urging and calling at nakikiusap po ako sa lahat ng ahensya ng gobyerno na in charge po dito sa mga migrant workers, ‘di lang sa migrant workers kundi sa mga apektadong Pilipino na naririto po sa ating bansa dahil sa pagtaas, tataas po talaga ang presyo nito, sigurado po ‘yan. Kapag tumaas ang presyo sa world market, apektado. Domino effect, tataas ang presyo ng bilihin pati ‘yung exchange rate ng dolyar. Domino effect po ‘yan kaya dapat ang gobyerno po ay gumalaw at kami naman dito sa Senado ay handang tumugon agad kung ano ang dapat naming gawin para mabawasan ‘yung bigat na dinadala po ng ating mga kababayan dahil sa epekto nitong tensyon sa Middle East,” he said.

Reiterating his stance, Go pledged support for measures that would directly benefit migrant workers and daily wage earners, especially those in the transport sector who are among the first to feel the impact of fuel price hikes.
“Susuporta po ako kung ano po ang makakatulong sa kababayan nating migrant workers, sa mga OFWs. Susuporta po ako kung ano po ang makakatulong na mapagaan po ang dinadala ng ating mga kababayan. Lalo na ang mga araw-araw na nagtatrabaho, ‘yung mga tsuper, ‘yung mga nasa transport sector po, dapat po ay tugunan po agad ito ng gobyerno at ang Senado at Kongreso ay handang magtrabaho 24/7 para po sa ating mga kababayan,” he said.
Go has consistently reaffirmed his support for overseas Filipino workers, highlighting his role as one of the authors and co-sponsors of Republic Act No. 11641, which created the Department of Migrant Workers to provide better protection and streamlined services for OFWs. RA 11641 consolidated government efforts to deliver more efficient and responsive assistance to Filipinos working abroad.
In support of migrant workers’ health needs, Go also filed Senate Bill No. 414, which seeks to institutionalize the OFW Hospital in San Fernando City, Pampanga, ensuring its long-term operations as a dedicated medical facility serving OFWs and their dependents. SBN 414 aims to secure stable funding and operational continuity for the hospital, reinforcing institutional support for migrant workers and their families.
