CAGBALETE ISLAND IN QUEZON NOW FULLY ELECTRIFIED

Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Chairperson and CEO Francis Saturnino Juan vowed to continue supporting the total electrification of off-grid areas in the country following the ceremonial lighting of the Meralco Microgrid Plant in Cagbalete Island, Quezon Province.

“Today, we are not merely launching a microgrid power system, a pioneering effort by a distribution utility, but also igniting a beacon of progress for Cagbalete Island,” Juan said in a speech during the ceremony.

The ERC chief commended the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) for the comprehensive responsibility it undertook—from design and construction to 24/7 operation and maintenance for all existing and future households.

“This kind of committed, long-term partnership turns policy into tangible progress for our people.”

The Cagbalete Island Microgrid Project of Meralco is expected to be the country’s largest microgrid system, which, upon full build-out, could provide 100 percent household electrification for the island.

He said that this achievement supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy in every community.

Juan noted that the project “stands as a flagship example of the public-private synergy” envisioned under the Microgrid Systems Act.

“Reliable power unlocks limitless potential—for enhanced hospitality, vibrant local enterprises, and unforgettable visitor experiences.”

“As you begin operations of this hybrid microgrid project, the ERC pledges its continued partnership. We will work diligently in the next phase to ensure the electricity rates for this microgrid are fair and affordable,” Juan concluded.
