The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will be working together to make EDSA safe and accessible to pedestrians and commuters.
This is following the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to make EDSA accessible and walkable for commuters and pedestrians, especially the vulnerable sectors like persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens and pregnant women.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon and Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez led the joint inspection of the pedestrian infrastructure on EDSA with members of Altmobility PH and Move as One Coaltion, and other civil society organizations. Dizon and Lopez inspected the stretch of EDSA from Ayala in Makati to Roxas Blvd. in Pasay.
“Ang pakiramdam ko po, isa akong mandirigma—napakahirap po.”
“Ang pakiramdam ko po, isa akong mandirigma—napakahirap po. Kaya ipinag-utos na ni Pangulong Marcos na dapat solusyunan na natin ito para maging commuter-centric at pedestrian-friendly naman ang EDSA,” Lopez stressed.
The two secretaries agreed to immediately implement the short-term action plan in EDSA such as widening pedestrian lanes, implementing shared bike lane and repairing stops, pedestrian waiting shed, and removing obstructions along the commuter route.
“Kailangan talaga once and for all, sabi nga ng Pangulo natin, ayusin na natin ito.”
“Kung araw-araw mong binabaybay yung EDSA, nakaka-stress talaga kung komyuter ka. Kailangan talaga once and for all, sabi nga ng Pangulo natin, ayusin na natin ito [EDSA],” Dizon said.
“Andami-dami nang nagrereklamo pero wala pa ring nangyayari, so ang sabi ng Pangulo, ang utos niya samin ni Sec. Banoy at [MMDA] Chairman Don Artes, gawin na nating pedestrian friendly at commuter friendly itong EDSA,” he added.
