The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) completed a vital flood control project structure along the Rio Chico River in Barangay Macamias, Guimba, Nueva Ecija – bolstering the community’s resilience against flooding.
The P47.8-million project, completed in 2-phases, involves the installation of flood control structures such as steel sheet piles, concrete beam coping, and gabions, designed to enhance structural integrity and resist water-induced damage.
Phase 1 covers the construction of 79 linear meters of flood mitigation infrastructure, using a foundation of steel materials to ensure long-term resilience.
“Rio Chico River frequently overflows during heavy rains, placing lives, farmland, and livelihoods in Barangay Macamias at constant risk of displacement and loss.”
Meanwhile, Phase 2 added 127.5 linear meters, with concrete slope protection to combat erosion and strengthen embankments.
According to the report to Secretary Manuel Bonoan from DPWH Region 3 Director Roseller Tolentino, Rio Chico River frequently overflows during heavy rains, placing lives, farmland, and livelihoods in Barangay Macamias at constant risk of displacement and loss.
“This revetment project strengthens the community’s capacity to withstand extreme weather by managing floodwaters and ensuring safety and economic continuity,” Tolentino said.
“Our river control structures not only support economic resilience and sustainable development by addressing climate-induced flood threats but also aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s Bagong Pilipinas initiative to promote resilient infrastructure and inclusive growth across the country,” he added.
