Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Atty. Don Artes and Las Piñas City Mayor April Aguilar inspected the results of the cleanup drive under the Bayanihan sa Estero program at Tartar Creek, Barangay Pamplona Tres and Barangay Talon Dos in Las Piñas City.
These joint efforts are part of the MMDA’s ongoing initiatives in response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s socioeconomic agenda to reduce obstructions, improve water flow, and ultimately mitigate flooding in Metro Manila.
The MMDA continues to intensify its efforts to clean and clear waterways across Metro Manila as part of its flood mitigation initiatives, aiming to reduce obstruction, improve drainage flow, and minimize flooding during heavy rains.
“The MMDA ensures that waterways are free from debris, garbage, and silt, allowing rainwater to flow more efficiently.”
“It’s good to see the before and after situation of Tartar Creek. The MMDA ensures that waterways are free from debris, garbage, and silt, allowing rainwater to flow more efficiently. This leads to reduced flooding risks, a cleaner environment, and improved health and safety for residents,” Artes explained.
Meanwhile, Dizon reaffirmed that these projects, ranging from drainage systems, pumping stations, flood control structures, and water retention facilities are part of a long-term strategy to protect and support the overall development of Metro Manila.
“The DPWH will continue to work with MMDA and all LGUs to implement comprehensive and sustainable infrastructure projects designed to significantly reduce flood risks across the region,” he stressed.
Moreover, Aguilar personally expressed her gratitude to MMDA for bringing its cleanup operation efforts to the city.
“This initiative not only helps restore the natural flow of our creeks but also reduces the risk of flooding in Las Piñas.”
“We deeply appreciate the commitment of MMDA for their invaluable assistance in cleaning our creek and for standing with us in our efforts to build a cleaner, safer, and more resilient city. This initiative not only helps restore the natural flow of our creeks but also reduces the risk of flooding in Las Piñas,” the lady mayor said.
Also, MMDA distributed lily pots and charcoal briquettes made from processed water hyacinths collected during the operation.
Meanwhile, Artes also inspected the Paco pumping station with Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso.
A stop log is being installed by DPWH at the said pumping station as a temporary solution to the damaged floodgate.
The damaged floodgate has caused flooding at the Paco area, particularly in Barangay 827.
Domagoso thanked the DPWH and MMDA for their immediate action.
The stop log will be done in two weeks, while rehabilitation of the flood gate will be finished by mid-March of 2026, according to the DPWH.
