The City Government of Manila is on high alert due to Typhoon Opong, with Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso assuring residents that all systems are in place to safeguard lives and properties.
In a Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment meeting held recently, Domagoso directed all city agencies to remain on full alert and to carry out coordinated measures in anticipation of the storm’s impact.
“Classes have been suspended in all public and private schools on September 26 and 27.”
As part of the city’s preparedness plan, the mayor announced the suspension of classes in all public and private schools on September 26 and 27, following the recommendation of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).
He also instructed the MDRRMO and the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) to advise residents in coastal areas to begin preemptive evacuation, in close coordination with the Manila Police District (MPD), which will be mobilized should forced evacuations become necessary.
To address possible flooding, the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) and the Department of Public Services (DPS) have been ordered to coordinate with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to ensure that all 24 pumping stations in the city are fully operational.
The Manila Public Information Office (MPIO) will also release the emergency hotlines of Meralco and inform the public that Doxycycline is available in all 44 city health centers and seven public hospitals.
The Schools Division Office (SDO), meanwhile, has been tasked to make certain that all personnel holding keys to schools designated as evacuation centers remain on standby.
In addition, all operating units across the city have been placed under high alert status, with the MDRRMO ordered to ready rubber boats and amphibious vehicles for possible rescue and evacuation operations.
“High alert tayong lahat, wala naman ibang aasahan ang mga tao kundi tayong nasa gobyerno.”
“High alert tayong lahat, wala naman ibang aasahan ang mga tao kundi tayong nasa gobyerno,” Domagoso stressed.
The MDSW has likewise been directed to prepare hot meals and ensure adequate food supplies in evacuation sites.
He stressed that the safety and welfare of Manileños remain the city government’s highest priority, urging residents to stay vigilant and to follow official advisories.
