MMDA EYES USE OF AI IN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

In line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to adopt the latest technologies and innovations for improved public service, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is now eyeing to advance traffic detection using artificial intelligence following a big switch in traffic management through its adaptive signaling system.

MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes said the agency wants to employ an innovation by advancing traffic detection from ground loop detector to video detector.

“As we phase in the adaptive signaling system, this innovation represents a major step towards ensuring smooth traffic flow, minimizing road crashes, and optimizing efficiency.”

“As we phase in the adaptive signaling system, this innovation represents a major step towards ensuring smooth traffic flow, minimizing road crashes, and optimizing efficiency,” Artes said during a press briefing held at the MMDA Head Office in Pasig City.

“Hopefully, by next year, this innovation will be put into place.”

According to MMDA Traffic Engineering Center (TEC), traffic signal system with video detectors are less susceptible to damage from roadworks, harsh weather, and physical interference. Powered with AI-technology, it can capture additional information about vehicles such as speed, direction, and license plate numbers.

Moreover, Artes also presented to the media several videos showing the incompatibility of the traffic signal countdown timers, drivers making split-decisions to speed through intersections, beating the red light incidents, among others.

The MMDA recently announced that it has removed traffic light countdown timers in 96 intersections along major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, replacing old fixed-timer traffic lights with an adaptive signaling system which uses sensors. Total decommissioning of the timers was carried out by the MMDA TEC.
