The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) officially inaugurated its Bike-to-Work End-of-Trip (EoT) Facilities at the Motorcycle Riding Academy (MRA) in Pasig City reinforcing its commitment to promoting active transport and sustainable mobility across Metro Manila.
The agency formally opened four shower rooms: one for male users, one for female users, and two all-gender rooms, ensuring that the transition from the road to the workplace is comfortable, inclusive, and accessible for all cyclists.
The newly launched facilities also provide essential amenities such as secure bike racks and changing spaces to support cyclists, especially those going to their work.
MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes expressed full support for the program and highlighted the agency’s plans to expand similar facilities across Metro Manila in line with the socioeconomic agenda of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. which promotes the use of sustainable modes of transportation.
Artes said that the MMDA will continue to roll out initiatives that encourage people, especially workers and office-goers, to consider cycling as adaptable mode of transportation.
In his remarks during the inauguration ceremony, MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre III emphasized the purpose of the initiative: “Ang goal natin dito ay simple lamang –to protect the welfare of the cyclists.”
Torre further described the project as an effective and concrete step toward a more bike-friendly metropolis, noting that the pilot initiative serves as a proof of concept and reflects MMDA’s long-term vision for sustainable and inclusive transport systems.
“Ang goal natin dito ay simple lamang –to protect the welfare of the cyclists.”
The MMDA is looking forward for a strong synergy between the agency itself and private sectors to provide support through subsidies for water and electricity for the facilities. Meanwhile, LPG distributor Republic Gas Corp. (Regasco) has committed to donating hygiene supplies, including soaps, shampoos, and 1,000 towels for users.
Cycling representative Pio Fortuno Jr. of Siklista Pilipino also expressed gratitude to the agency for acknowledging the needs of the biking community and advancing cyclist-friendly programs.
“I would like to thank the MMDA for recognizing cyclists. I hope a lot of private companies would follow the example of MMDA na maglagay din sila ng bike-friendly facilities,” Fortuno said.
MMDA is also exploring the possibility of operating the facilities 24/7 to better serve and accommodate more cyclists. Currently, around 1,700 cyclists use the EDSA bike lane daily. For monitoring and security, users are required to register upon entry before accessing the facilities for free.
The inauguration was led by Artes and Torre, together with other MMDA officials, representatives from partner agencies, and private sector stakeholders, including Maynilad, Manila Water, and Meralco.
Also present during the ceremony are members of the cycling and mobility advocacy community including MNL Moves, Move As One Coalition, Sakay PH, Make It Safer Movement, Bicycle Friendly Philippines, Tiklop Society of the Philippines, Siklista Pilipino, Firefly Brigade, East Side Riders Marikina, Renacimiento Manila, Happy Pedal Project, and the National Bicycle Organization, as they show strong support for the agency’s active transport initiatives.
