“This is great news for our energy security, as this discovery will contribute to price stability,” Senator Pia Cayetano said, welcoming the discovery of natural gas at Malampaya East-1.
The veteran legislator noted that strengthening indigenous sources of natural gas helps reduce exposure to volatile global fuel prices and supports a more stable power supply over the long term.
“Strengthening indigenous sources of natural gas helps reduce exposure to volatile global fuel prices.”
Linking the discovery to recent policy reforms, Cayetano, as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Energy and the principal author and sponsor of the Philippine Natural Gas Industry Development Act, said the measure provides a clear framework for developing the country’s natural gas industry.
The law directs the Department of Energy to undertake comprehensive downstream planning, promote investment, and prioritize indigenous natural gas to reduce import dependence and help moderate power costs over time.
The seasoned lawmaker emphasized that, beyond policy and planning, what ultimately matters is how energy developments translate into everyday life for Filipino families.
“Ang pinakaimportante sa mga kababayan natin: affordable and reliable energy supply!”
“Iyan naman ang pinakaimportante sa mga kababayan natin: affordable and reliable energy supply!” the lady senator stressed.
She noted that natural gas remains an important transition fuel as the country works toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.
Cayetano added that strengthening indigenous energy supply supports the country’s commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals on affordable and clean energy, climate action, and inclusive development, areas she also advances as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation, and Futures Thinking.
She said the Malampaya East-1 discovery underscores the importance of sound policy and sustained investment in the energy sector.
“Energy security is not achieved overnight. It requires long-term planning, clear legislation, and responsible development of our own resources so that the benefits reach ordinary Filipinos,” Cayetano concluded.
