In classrooms all around the Philippines, mining is often framed as either a resource buffet or a direct path to starvation of Inang Kalikasan. The industry’s overwhelmingly negative public perception, shaped by highly publicized environmental disasters, has long overshadowed the role it holds in national development and economic stability. This year’s National Geology and Mining Engineering Convention (NGEMC) seeks to challenge that binary thinking.
Now on its seventh installment, the two-day event hosted by the University of the Philippines Mining Engineering Society (UP MINERS) creates a stage for informed and student-led dialogue on the extractive industries of mining and geology. Bringing together 75 students from 11 academic institutions from all over Luzon, the NGEMC aims to invigorate critical discussion, encourage innovations, and inspire the next generation of leaders in the mineral industry.

Spanning five academic and competitive competitions from March 7-8, 2026, the NGEMC offers participants an unfiltered look into the professional realities of mining and geology. Through the Laboratory Tours and Career and Advocacy talks, the students will be exposed to the real-world practice and the consequent contemporary challenges faced by the sector in day-to-day operations. The Poster Making, Essay Writing, and Quiz Bee competitions on the other hand, provide avenues for the participants to apply standing and newly acquired technical knowledge alongside critical and creative thinking.
The convention also proudly boasts the endorsement of Engr. Ramon N. Santos, the Chairman of the Professional Regulatory Board of Mining Engineering, who cited the host organization’s more than two decades of contribution to the Philippine mining sector. Engr. Santos further emphasized the role of NGEMC as a platform where students and industry professionals can engage in conversations on sustainable resource development, technological developments and how to strike the balance between economic growth and environmental stewardship.
Additional information on the event and details on each competition are readily available through the NGEMC Facebook Page.
