REALIFILM 2023: HAZE OF TRUTH: UNDERLYING GAP OF LIFE

MANILA, Philippines – At the Adamson University Theater on January 27, the university’s official film organization, Silip@lente, in partnership with the Cultural Affairs Office, hosted their annual inter-school film festival, Realifilm 2023. After two years in a row of screening and awarding films digitally, Siilip@Lente paved the way for this year’s Realifilm competition to be held in a physical location. In conjunction with Silip@Lente and CCP Arthouse Cinema, a special screening was held at OZ AVR prior to the awards night, in which two films were presented to the audience. Films such as “Mendiola Massacre” by Lito Tiongson and “See you George,” a 2022 Cinemalaya Short Film, directed by Mark Moneda, are among those that will be shown.

The highly anticipated film showing, which is the second part of the event, will feature films submitted by students from a variety of educational institutions. The event is officially kicked off by Ms. Catherine Cequena, director of the Cultural Affairs Office, who gives some opening remarks to the audience. Following the screening of all 26 films that were entered, a selection of eight films was shown as the “SILAU’S Choice.” The film “Sa mga mata ng bata” by Anonymous Jeepney Productions won the bronze award, “Hindi kita malilimutan” by PELIKVLA won the silver award, and “All the Things Left Unsaid” by Recto Films won the gold award. All three films were nominated for the Philippine Film Critics Society Awards.

Inclined with the competition theme “Romanticizing life and social issues,” the following winners of the Silver Award-winning production members shared their insight on how they came up with their selected film story in “Sa Mga Mata ng Bata” by Chauncy Cruz of De la Salle – College of Saint Benilde.

“Noong ginagawa namin iyong film, we all have that same goal, tungkol sa mga takot ng mga bata. (When we came up with the film, we all had that same goal, about the fear of the kids.) It seems easy to corrupt the minds of children, particularly when it comes to interacting with adults. Kase iyon yung nakikita nilang authority” (It’s almost as if their thoughts are the most susceptible to manipulation and easily swayed, particularly when interacting with adults because children view adults as having more authority.)

During this time, a number of students from a variety of production teams who were present at the event discussed how a platform of this kind effectively showcases not only creativity in the film industry but also social changes in contemporary society.

“Kase nga malaking effect iyong nakikita natin sa media, so pag maraming audience ang na open dito sa mga ganitong topic.. And I really hope that we can grow from this.” (Because the media has the most influence, and this indicates that the more audiences who become open with this topics, the more hopefully lots of people/we can learn from it.)

The day following the actual screening of the film, Silip@Lente organized a virtual film screening for all 26 of the films that were entered into the Realifilm 2023 competition using Zoom Meeting.

Without the support of our sponsors, we simply could not hold this event. Silip@Lente would like to express their gratitude to the following individuals and organizations:
