NEW AIRPORT TO ACCOMMODATE 100 MILLION PASSENGERS PER YEAR – CASTELO

“There is a need to decongest Metro Manila because the economic losses due to traffic has risen to PhP 3.5 billion per day. This is just unconscionable.”

This according to Quezon City Rep. Winnie Castelo, chairman of the House Committee on Metro Manila Development.

The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) chaired by President Rodrigo Duterte has recently approved the unsolicited proposal of San Miguel Corporation to build an airport in Bulakan, Bulacan.

This PhP 735.63 billion project consists of the construction, operation, and maintenance of an international airport with an area of approximately 2,500 hectares; the construction of a passenger terminal that can accommodate 100 million passengers per year; and the construction of an 8.4-kilometer toll road.

San Miguel Corporation is now expected to face a Swiss Challenge for this right to build an alternative to Metro Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

“This is another step in the right direction, an example of the private sector helping government ease the load for commuters and businesses traversing Metro Manila’s very busy roads and thoroughfares, and generating jobs and livelihood for thousands of our people,” said Castelo.

“We hope that the construction of this world-class facility will begin immediately and will be completed on time,” added Castelo.

“The traffic nightmare has persisted for so long; the time has come for a solution, or a combination of solutions, to address this never-ending problem,” concluded Castelo.
