ANAKALUSUGAN TO PUBLIC: PROTECT VS HOLY WEEK HEAT

ANAKALUSUGAN Party-list Rep. Ray Reyes expressed concern over the potential health risks of the rising temperature in the country and reminded the public to take precautions against the heat as Christians observe Lent.

“Prolonged exposure to heat may lead to cramps, exhaustion, or worse, a potentially fatal heatstroke. We urge everyone to take precautions and be mindful of their health as we observe Lent,” he said.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the heat index in Catarman, Northern Samar reached 45℃ on Friday, March 31.

Meanwhile, Dagupan City, Pangasinan (42℃); NAIA Pasay City, Metro Manila (42℃); Butuan City, Agusan del Norte (41℃); and Mactan International Airport, Cebu (41℃) also recorded very high heat indexes on the same day.

“Safety is of paramount importance and extreme caution should be taken during these temperature surges,” Rep. Reyes said.

He urged the public to follow the tips provided by the Department of Health to prevent heat stroke and other heat illnesses. These are:

  • Limit the amount of time you spend outdoors.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid tea, coffee, soda, and alcohol.
  • Schedule heavy-duty activities for the beginning or end of the day when it’s cooler.

Apart from taking precautions against the heat, Rep. Reyes also reminded the public to remain conscious of health and safety protocols during religious gatherings.

“Apart from the possible transmission of COVID, many of our local customs present an increased risk in the transmission of infectious diseases,” he said.

“Let us always be mindful and watch out for our health this Lenten season. We at ANAKALUSUGAN Party-list wish everyone a healthy, safe, and blessed observance of Holy Week,” Reyes added.
