Senator Bong Go extended his condolences and assistance to the family of 41-year-old Jerland Enriquez who died after risking his life to rescue three neighbors during severe flooding in Quezon City recently.
Enriquez, a fruit porter originally from Nueva Ecija, went missing after helping save a mother and her two children who were swept away by strong floodwaters in Barangay Unang Sigaw, Quezon City.
His family searched for him for more than three days before his remains were found on September 24 in the San Francisco River in Barangay Damayan, Quezon City.
According to local authorities, Enriquez was at home when the floodwaters rose, and he noticed three of his neighbors being carried away by the current. He immediately went to their aid and was able to help rescue Jean Rose Reyes and her two children. She later recalled the danger they faced as floodwaters entered and damaged their home, with debris and strong currents threatening their lives.
“Jerland is a kind and helpful person who would readily assist others.”
Reyes expressed her gratitude to Enriquez, saying that he sacrificed himself to save them. His brother, Alexander, meanwhile, described Jerland as a kind and helpful person who would readily assist others.
Through a video call, Go personally spoke with Enriquez’s family to express his condolences and support. His office also sent flowers and financial assistance to the bereaved family as they mourned his death.
Go paid tribute to Enriquez’s courage and selflessness, particularly his decision to help his neighbors despite the danger posed by the floodwaters.
“Sa kabila ng panganib, pinili niyang tumulong at iligtas ang kanyang mga kapitbahay.”
“Saludo ako sa kabayanihan at malasakit ni Jerland. Sa kabila ng panganib, pinili niyang tumulong at iligtas ang kanyang mga kapitbahay. Hindi malilimutan ang kanyang sakripisyo at ang mga buhay na kanyang natulungan,” the veteran legislator said.
Furthermore, consistent with the seasoned lawmaker’s recognition to Enriquez, in 2022, the Senate has also adopted Senate Resolution No. 233, which Go co-sponsored, honoring five members of the Bulacan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) namely George Agustin, Troy Justin Agustin, Marby Bartolome, Narciso Calayag Jr., and Jerson Resurreccion, who died while conducting rescue operations during Super Typhoon Karding in San Miguel, Bulacan.
The senator also prayed for Enriquez’s eternal rest and for strength and comfort for his family as they cope with their loss.
“Maraming salamat sa iyong kabayanihan, Jerland. Hindi malilimutan ang mga buhay na iyong natulungan,” he concluded.
