CEBU CITY GOV’T BARES EL NIŃO CONTINGENCY PLAN

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama appeared before the Cebu City Council recently to share the city government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the El Niño phenomenon.

In fact, Rama said, he already gave directives as early as March 2023 for the City Agriculture Department (CAD) and the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) to come up with a contingency plan.

“It would seem that we are being pictured as remiss.”

“It would seem that we are being pictured as remiss. Mura’g naay pagkuwang. Pero dili na tinuod,” the mayor told the City Council during its executive session.

He explained that the executive department already has a working contingency plan as early as May last year.

This, Rama said, was the basis for the City’s programs and projects to help those in the mountain barangays during the dry spell.

“We have been doing our job.”

“We have been doing our job. Please don’t picture us as not doing our jobs,” he told the session, which was also attended by the city’s barangay captains.

Among others, Rama reported that the City had purchased and distributed seedlings, hoses, drums, and other farm supplies and materials to barangays and farmers associations.

He likewise said that through the Department of Public Services, the City had also been rehabilitating deep wells in the city as another source of water for people.
