DEPED LAUNCHES PROJECT LIGTAS+

The Department of Education has intensified its protection to Filipino families by launching Project LIGTAS+, a modern risk intelligence platform aimed at safeguarding students from the calamities.

Using geospatial analytics, satellite imagery, and historical hazard data, Project LIGTAS+ or Learning Institution Geohazard Tracking and Assessment for Safety will give real-time and detailed risk profiles in every school.

It aims to help communities to prepare early to avoid disruption of learning that usually leads to added burden to families who are victims of disasters.

Included in the features of the platform are interactive multi-hazard maps, school-level risk profiles, flood intelligence from satellite SAR data, earthquake impact assessments, volcanic activity monitoring, and AI-powered weather forecasts up to 10 days.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara stressed that the effectiveness of this system can be gauged in the protection it gives to students, the reduction in the disruption of classes and the steady delivery of education.

“Education is the most reliable ladder out of poverty. When a disaster strikes, that ladder shouldn’t break.”

“Education is the most reliable ladder out of poverty. When a disaster strikes, that ladder shouldn’t break. Through Project LIGTAS+, we are fulfilling President Bongbong Marcos’ mandate to use innovation not just for safety, but for stability,” Angara stressed.

“We are moving away from guesswork and toward a future where data ensures that no child’s education is washed away by a storm,” the education chief added.

For the school community, it serves as an alternative in the suspension of classes because DepEd can identify particular schools in a locality which are at risk and which ones are safe to open.

With this level of certainty, the long-term effect of disasters can be avoided. When it is safe to continue classes, students will not be left behind while parents can resume working.

Project LIGTAS+ is designed to give a clear report on dangers for officials to be able to give orders in dealing with the actual situation in their areas.

Learners are expected to benefit from it resulting in a more stable schedule of classes and better guidance, while the platform is monitoring how the calamity will affect their academic progress.

Teachers and school personnel will also have a safe environment because of the early warning given on heat index and landslides before it happens.

Even while it is still in the pilot implementation phase, Project LIGTAS+ is already actively helping DepEd’s disaster response and long-term safety planning. The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) is using the platform in its regular situational reports during disasters and it is also used by M7X Ready School Program launched last April 30, 2026. The platform was designed to help in the long-term planning of school infrastructure and resource prioritization.

By linking safety data with learning, DepEd assures the continuity of education is a reality in every classroom, in any location.

“Project LIGTAS+ gives field offices up-to-date and evidence-based information for faster response to disasters.”

According to the DepEd Education Center for AI Research (ECAIR), Project LIGTAS+ gives field offices up-to-date and evidence-based information for faster response to disasters.

The project aims to give peace of mind to parents knowing their children are protected by a system that is always ahead of any threat from the environment, so that the road to progress and the way out of poverty will remain open.
