GAB WELCOMES YOUNG CHESS, BILLIARDS ATHLETES

Different generations of Filipino chess and billiard athletes came together as Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera welcomed young athletes, professional athletes, and veteran sports personalities during a courtesy visit at the GAB Central Office in Makati City.

Joining Rivera during the courtesy call are Commissioner Angel Bautista and Supervising Administrative Officer Dr. Oliver O. Evangelista.

Among the visitors were young chess players bound to compete in the Korea International Chess Festival 2026, scheduled for November 3-8, 2026, in South Korea.

Also in attendance is rising professional billiards player and one of the future of Philippine billiards Albert James “AJ” Manas, who is set to participate in upcoming international competitions, including the 59th All Japan Championships on November 18-23, 2026.

They were accompanied by chess coach Ederwin Estivillo, National Master and professional chess athlete Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., Japan Billiards Champion Roel Esquillo, professional billiards promoter Drawin Dizol, Gilas News Editor-in-Chief Danny Simon, and professional billiards athletes Paul John Ortega and Armando Cagol.

“Pursue your chosen sports with dedication and passion.”

Rivera encouraged the young athletes to pursue their chosen sports with dedication and passion, reminding them that “the future belongs to you”.

He likewise advised the professional billiards players to make wise decisions both in competition and in life, emphasizing that, much like billiards, every move requires careful planning.

“Make wise decisions both in competition and in life.”

The visit also featured legendary Filipino professional billiards player Jose “Amang” Parica, who shared valuable lessons from his professional career, particularly the importance of maintaining physical well-being, managing finances responsibly, and preparing for the future. Parica also discussed with Rivera the possible staging of the Amang Parica Cup next year.

GAB continues to recognize the achievements and contributions of sporting legends who inspire the next generation of Filipino athletes to pursue excellence and carry forward the legacy of Philippine professional sports.
