Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso marked his 52nd birthday by giving 52 families the gift of a new home, as the city government held an In-City Vertical Housing Project Grand Raffle.
The raffle drew 52 winning beneficiaries who will occupy ready-for-occupancy units at San Lazaro Residences, a 20-storey vertical housing development that features a health center, the largest public laboratory in the country owned by the City Government of Manila, a commercial area, swimming pool, and function room.
Units are 42 square meters with two bedrooms, available at a monthly contribution of only ₱2,000 to ₱3,000.
Domagoso and Vice Mayor Chi Atienza personally drew the winning stubs from the raffle drum before some 3,300 applicants watching the live broadcast on the Facebook pages of the Manila Public Information Office, Manila Urban Settlements Office, and the Mayor’s official page.
“Units under the program remain under city government stewardship to prevent the abuse seen in some housing programs.”
Domagoso, who grew up as an informal settler himself, explained that units under the program remain under city government stewardship to prevent the abuse seen in some housing programs where recipients sold their units to others, defeating the purpose of public housing.
Beneficiaries who later choose to leave their units will have their total contributions returned in full by the city government, with a family staying 20 years at ₱2,000 a month receiving ₱480,000 upon surrender of the unit.
He also disclosed that collected amortizations are invested in government securities under a city ordinance he personally authored during the pandemic, with the fund already having grown to ₱50 million.
San Lazaro Residences is the seventh in-city housing project completed under the Domagoso administration, joining Tondominium 1, Tondominium 2, Basecommunity, Binondominium 1, Pedro Gil Residences, and San Sebastian Residences, with Binondominium 2 currently under construction.
