MU WEEK 2023: ASCENCIO – TEMPERED THROUGH FIRE, ENKINDLED IN GLORY

The Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity and Sorority are the first, the largest, and the most acclaimed medical Fraternity and Sorority in the Philippines and in Asia, and the leading Greek-lettered global network of UP Medical Alumni. Nearing 90 years of history, the Fraternity and Sorority have forged an unparalleled legacy through the guidance of the Four Pillars: Brotherhood and Sisterhood, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service. With more than 3,300 Brothers and Sisters from across the world, these institutions have proudly produced many distinguished figures in the field of medicine. As a testament to the Fraternity and Sorority’s selfless commitment to public service, both have been recognized locally and internationally for their efforts in upholding the values of the noble medical profession and the mantra of the UP College of Medicine of serving the underserved.

Annually, the Mu Sigma Phi commemorates the Four Pillars embedded in them through the highly-anticipated MU WEEK, with this year’s festivities to be held on August 25 to September 1. With the theme ASCENCIO: Tempered through Fire, Enkindled in Glory, Mu Week 2023 reflects the Mu Sigma Phi soaring high towards its 90th founding year.

Mu Week 2023 will kick off on August 24 with the Opening Ceremony and Mu Exhibit at the Portico Lobby of the Henry Sy Sr. Medical Sciences Building inside the UP Manila campus. Indeed a sight to behold, the Mu Exhibit will showcase the flagship projects of the Fraternity and Sorority and their accomplishments under each of the Four Pillars for the past years. It will also highlight the successes of its Brothers and Sisters as pioneers, heroes, leaders, scholars, luminaries, scientists, and humanitarians in the field of medicine and beyond. The celebration of Brotherhood and Sisterhood may be best exemplified during Fiesta at the Hut, happening on the same opening day. Here, generations of Mu Sigma Phi members, both undergraduates and alumni, will gather to strengthen their lasting bonds over delicious food and nostalgic stories.

Kaya Mu Ba? is a thrilling quiz-game show, where the freshmen of UPCM Class of 2028 will battle it out with luck and wits about general information topics — from history to current events, pop culture and sports, and med school life, as well. This will be held online through Zoom on the evening of August 25, which will surely be a night of friendly competition and exciting surprises as winners will get to take home thrilling prizes like premium stethoscopes, customized scrubs, and sturdy tumblers.

Mu Week 2023 will not be complete without its Brothers and Sisters honoring the tradition of self-denying Service. Through Lukso ng Dugo, a blood-letting drive for the benefit of the Philippine General Hospital Blood Bank, the Mu Sigma Phi and its partners will not only contribute to supplying the ever-present demand for life-saving blood, but will also raise awareness on the critical importance of blood in healthcare in our post-pandemic world. It will be conducted at the Holy Family Parish Church in Manila on August 26, from 8AM to 3PM.

To continue advocating health through immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases, the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority will conduct the fourth installment of Bakunadong Bayani under one of its flagship service projects, ImMUnity: An Ounce of Prevention, which will offer FREE Influenza and Hepatitis B vaccines to UP Manila students. This vaccination drive will be set up for two days at the Portico Lobby of the Henry Sy Sr. Medical Sciences Building on August 29 to 30, from 12NN to 1:30PM and 5:00PM to 6:30PM.

August 30 holds an evening to look forward to as esteemed resident and consultant radiologists and pathologists of the Mu Sigma Phi host a night of revelry at the Radio-Patho Spliszle. Here, the warm camaraderie emblematic of Mu Brotherhood and Sisterhood will permeate the Default Cafe Pub as the Brods and Sisses share stories over some beers and wines in an evening of reminiscing and merrymaking.

On September 1 — the final day of the week-long celebration, the Brothers and Sisters of the Mu Sigma Phi will gather to offer their gratitude to the Almighty Father during the Thanksgiving Mass, to be held at the PGH Chapel at 12NN. In the evening, the Brods and Sisses will set the stage ablaze with their impeccable music talents through Mu Rock, the first and only rockeoke party in the UP College of Medicine, which will be held face-to-face once again after 3 long years! This will be a fun-filled evening of free-flowing drinks, awesome spectacles, and spectacular music featuring their very own Mu Band – an embodiment that medical school goes beyond the four corners of the classroom. Mu Rock will be held on the 7th floor of the Dilexio Building, corner Singalong Street in Malate, Manila. Gates will open at 7PM and the performances will start at 8PM. Tickets for this event are FREE for UPCM freshmen, and walk-ins will be accommodated at the venue. At this one-of-a-kind rockeoke party, anyone can sing their hearts out and channel their inner rockstars for the night! The stage is yours to live out your vocalist, lead guitarist, bassist, pianist, or drummer dreams!
