A long walk to the deep well just to fetch water in some public schools in Samar will no longer be needed with the recent installation by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) of rainwater collection systems (RWCS).
According to DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, 20 units of 4,000-liter tanks have been installed in various schools within the cities of Alamagro, Gandara, Sta. Margarita and Calbayog in Samar.

“Republic Act 6716 designates the DPWH to undertake the construction of water wells, rainwater collectors, development of springs, and rehabilitation of existing wells in all barangays in the country.”

The schools that benefitted from the rainwater collector projects at Almagro, Samar are as follows: Almagro Central Elementary School, Malobago Elementary School, Tonga-Tonga Elementary School, Kirikiti Elementary School, Magsaysay Elementary School, San Isidro Elementary School, Talahid Elementary School, Imelda Elementary School, Costa Rica Elementary School, and Lunang II Elementary School. In Gandara, Samar are as follows: Tagnao Elementary School and Casab-ahan Elementary School.
In the town of Sta. Margarita, beneficiaries are: Sta. Margarita II Central Elementary School, Palale Elementary School, Solsogon Elementary School, Clarencio Calagos Memorial School of Fisheries and Burabod Elementary School. In Calbayog City are as follows: Tinambacan Central Elementary School, Malajog Integrated School , and Ba-ay Elementary School.
