SENATE ADOPTS RESOLUTION COMMENDING TEACHERS

The Senate has adopted a resolution honoring and commending teachers and educators for their hard work and commitment in shaping the country’s future leaders.

Senate Resolution No. 142 was adopted to consolidate Senate Resolution Nos. 149 and 155, authored by Senators Bong Revilla, Win Gatchalian and Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri respectively.

October 5 was declared World Teachers’ Day by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in recognition of teachers’ role in the delivery of quality education. In the Philippines, a multisectoral movement led by the Metrobank Foundation, the Department of Education and their partners in the academe, business and civil sectors celebrate the National Teachers’ Month (NTM) every September 5 to October 5.

Revilla said the overall concept of the NTM initiative is to engage all sectors across the country in joining the celebrations by bringing out the Teacher’s Day festivities from schools to the public sphere.

The veteran legislator said the NTM and the National Teachers’ Day is the most opportune time to recognize Filipino teachers and their indispensable role in inclusive and sustainable development.

“The Senate honors and commends the Filipino teachers for their hard work and commitment to shaping the learners of all generations.”

For his part, Senator Joel Villanueva said that more than 600,000 college students are currently enrolled in educational institutions. The figure, the veteran legislator said, represents 20 percent of the 3.2 million students enrolled in universities and colleges nationwide.

“There are many young people who want to be teachers.”

“There are many young people who want to be teachers. I have spoken to a lot of education students and I ask them why they want to be teachers. They always reply for the young children, the next generation and for the country,” the seasoned lawmaker said.

“Let us continue to invest in our teachers who mold the future generations of our people. Happy teachers’ month and more power to our teachers,” Villanueva added.
