SOLON LAUDS EFFORTS TO PREVENT DATA BREACHES IN COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES

Rizal 2nd District Rep. Fidel Nograles lauded the National Privacy Commission’s efforts to work with various universities and colleges to draw up a data privacy code of conduct in line with the implementation of distance learning.

“With the migration of various operations online due to the pandemic, the importance of data privacy cannot be emphasized enough, kaya natutuwa tayo na nakikipag-tulungan ang NPC sa mga paaralan para maging mainstream ang privacy consciousness,” Nograles said.

“There is an influx of personal data that many institutions are probably not ready for.”

According to NPC chief Raymund Liboro, the code of conduct will set standard policies and measures aimed at preventing data breaches and that would guide learning institutions on how to deal with such occurrences.

The privacy body hopes to complete it before the opening of the 2021-2022 schoolyear.

“Dahil sa pivot towards online operations, there is an influx of personal data that many institutions are probably not ready for. Sa lalong madaling panahon kinakailangan na makapag-latag tayo ng maayos na safeguards,” the neophyte lawmaker said.

He added that unless safeguards are put in place, the threat of security breaches would be ever-present.

The education sector alone had 19 breach notifications from January to June this year.

The commission reported that the education sector alone had 19 breach notifications from January to June this year, which has already exceeded 2019’s 18 notifications.

“Napakataas ng posibilidad na tataas pa ang kaso ng mga privacy breach, kaya kailangang doble-oras at doble-ingat ang pamahalaan at mga organisasyon sa pagsiguro na ligtas ang personal na impormasyon ng ating mga kababayan,” Nograles said.
