SORSOGON SEEKS UNESCO SEAL FOR BULUSAN PARK

The Provincial Government of Sorsogon, through the Sorsogon Provincial Tourism, Culture and Arts Office (SPTCAO) is applying for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Global Geopark Seal for Bulusan Volcano Natural Park.

Already, the SPTCAO is finalizing the requirements needed to have the Bulasan Volcano Natural Park be an addition to the 169 global geoparks found in 44 other countries.

“This application may foster multi-cultural links between heritage and conservation and the maintenance of geological and cultural diversity.”

Governor Chiz Escudero believes that this application may foster multi-cultural links between heritage and conservation and the maintenance of geological and cultural diversity, using participatory schemes of partnership and management.

Escudero said should it qualify, it would raise the profile of the territory of the Bulusan Volcano Natural Park and be a high-quality destination by using the communication and promotion tools of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN).

“It can also strengthen the quality and distribution of tourism products and local products,” the governor added.

The UNESCO Global Geoparks are unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

It comprises a number of geological heritage sites of special scientific importance, rarity or beauty.

These features are representative of a region’s geological history and the events and processes that formed it. It must also include important natural, historic, cultural tangible and intangible heritage sites.
