INCOMING UP PRESIDENT JIMENEZ TAKES OATH AT CHED

Incoming University of the Philippines (UP) President Angelo Jimenez took his oath of office Tuesday, February 7 at the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in Diliman, Quezon City.

CHED Chairperson Prospero de Vera III, who co-chairs the UP Board of Regents (BOR), administered Jimenez’s oath.

In his vision paper, Jimenez stated that UP “must strive to become a global university.” He said he will focus on enhancing graduate and post-graduate programs, strengthening academic linkages with government and industry, democratizing access to the University, embracing digital transformation, implementing an open data policy, and defending academic freedom.

Jimenez begins his six-year term on Friday, February 10 with a turnover ceremony to be held at Quezon Hall, where he will hold office.

In a unanimous decision last December, the 11-member UP BOR chose Jimenez over five other nominees. He will succeed outgoing University chief Danilo Concepcion.

Jimenez is an Of counsel with the Jaromay Laurente and Associates. Prior to his selection as President, he served on the BOR as Student Regent in 1992 and as a MalacaƱang-appointed Regent from 2016 to 2021. During the same period, he was a lecturer at the UP Law Center Institute of the Administration of Justice.

The next UP President earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1987 and his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1994, both in UP Diliman. He passed the Bar in 1994. Later, he earned his Masters in Public Management from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.

According to the UP Charter of 2008, the University President also serves as the Chief Academic and Executive Officer of the country’s premier institution of higher learning and is concurrently the Co-Chairperson of the BOR.
