PBA PARTY-LIST HAILS PH SAMBO TEAM’S EXPLOITS

The Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Party-list hailed the victorious exploits of the Sambo National Team led by ace Davao-hailing siblings Sydney Sy Tancontian and Chino Sy Tancontian in recent sambo competitions.

“Congratulations to the power siblings Sydney and Chino for once again bringing pride and honor not only to their home city but to the whole country,” PBA Party-list Rep. Migs Nograles said.

Nograles also praised the “sustained excellence” of the Pilipinas Sambo Federation for “creating a platform for its athletes to perform well.”

Earlier this month, Sydney Tancontian won the gold medal in the +80kg Senior Women division of the 2022 Asian Sambo Championships held in Jouneih, Lebanon. She is the first Southeast Asian athlete to become champion in the said competition.

Meanwhile, her brother, Chino, nabbed the gold in the -98kg Senior Men division in the 2022 Indonesia Sambo Series held in Bandung this weekend. Chino also won a gold medal at the 30th Southeast Asian Games. The sport, however, was not included in the Vietnam SEA Games held last month.

His teammates, Troy Estrella Legaspi (-71kg), and Janry Pamor (-58kg) both got silver medals in their respective divisions.

Nograles also praised the “sustained excellence” of the Pilipinas Sambo Federation for “creating a platform for its athletes to perform well.”

“Our sports federations play a crucial role in ensuring the performance of our athletes. Kung maganda ang environment at wala nang ibang kailangang isipin ang mga atleta, makakapag-focus sila sa training at sa laban nila,” the Davaoeña lawyer said.

The neophyte solon expressed confidence that Philippine athletes would continue to have a good showing in sports tilts in the future.

“Naniniwala tayong magpapatuloy pa ang paghakot ng mga atleta natin ng mga medal sa mga susunod na paligsahan,” she said.

She warned, however, that there is no room for complacency.

“We cannot relax dahil ang dami pa nating issues na kailangan ayusin, not only in the overall Philippine sports scene, kundi pati na rin sa iba’t ibang federations, down to the grassroots. Kailangang sama-sama nating tugunan ang mga issue na ito,” said Nograles.
